Jose Antonio Kast Wins Chilean Presidential Election, Right-Wing Government After 35 Years

Victory of Jose Antonio Kast

In a major political shift, José Antonio Kast, a former conservative congressman, won the Chilean presidential election on Sunday. He defeated the center-left ruling coalition’s candidate, marking the beginning of a right-wing government in Chile after 35 years of democratic rule.

Kast received 58.2% of the vote. His campaign promises, including strict action on crime, the expulsion of illegal immigrants, and revitalizing Chile's slow economy, resonated with voters. His victory marks a significant shift in Chile's political landscape, moving away from the left-wing dominance that has shaped the country for decades.

Jeanette Jara Accepts Defeat

Jeanette Jara, the communist candidate and Kast's rival, garnered 41.8% of the vote. After Kast’s lead became insurmountable, Jara conceded defeat over the phone and congratulated him on his victory. Following the results, Kast’s supporters took to the streets to celebrate his win with chants and jubilation.
