Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, currently serving as the Deputy Army Chief, will be the new Chief of the Army. He will take over as the next Army Chief from June 30. Lieutenant General Dwivedi, awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM), has served in Jammu and Kashmir for a long time.
The government had given a one-month extension to Army Chief General Manoj Pandey on May 26 after the sixth phase of elections on May 25. Due to this, he will remain in this post till June 30. Earlier, he was to retire on May 31. The Defense Ministry said that this extension was given under Rule 16A (4) of the Army Rules, 1954.
Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was born on July 1, 1964. He was commissioned into the Indian Army's Infantry Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on December 15, 1984. He has nearly 40 years of experience. During his long and distinguished service, he has served in several command, staff and instructional positions. Lieutenant Upendra Dwivedi's command appointments include command of Regiment 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, Brigade 26 Sector Assam Rifles, IG, Assam Rifles (East) and 9 Corps.
Lieutenant Dwivedi has studied at Sainik School Rewa, National Defense College and US Army War College. He has also done courses from DSSC Wellington and Army War College (Mhow). Apart from this, he was awarded 'Distinguished Fellow' in the prestigious NDC equivalent course at USAWC, Carlisle, USA. He has M Phil in Defense and Management Studies and two master's degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
