On June 3, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the appointment of Vijaya Bharti Sayani as the Acting Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Sayani, who has been a member of the NHRC since December 28 last year, took over the post from June 2 after former Chairperson Justice Arun Kumar Mishra retired on June 1. The notification issued under Section 7(1) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 states that the President has authorized Sayani to act as Chairperson until a new appointment is made. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Mishra was serving as the Chairperson of the NHRC since June 2, 2021. On June 3, the Ministry of Home Affairs appointed Vijaya Bharti Sayani as the Acting Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission i.e. NHRC. He replaced former Judge Arun Kumar Mishra, who retired on June 1. Vijaya Bharti Sayani was serving as a member in the NHRC. He joined NHRC on 28 December 2023.
