On April 16, 2025, Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai was officially recommended as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). The recommendation was made by the current CJI, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, whose tenure concludes on May 13, 2025. Following the established tradition, the sitting CJI has proposed the name of the most senior judge as his successor.
If appointed, Justice Gavai will assume office on May 14, 2025, becoming the 52nd CJI. His term is expected to last until November 23, 2025, as he is scheduled to retire on that date.
Justice Gavai's judicial career commenced in 1985, and he was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. Notably, he will be the second CJI from the Scheduled Caste community, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, who served as CJI from 2007 to 2010.
Justice Gavai has authored numerous judgments and has been part of several significant benches during his tenure at the Supreme Court. His appointment is seen as a step towards enhancing diversity and representation within the judiciary.
