Kamal Haasan Nominated to Rajya Sabha with DMK Support
On May 28, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has been nominated as a Rajya Sabha candidate. Elections for four Rajya Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu are scheduled for June 19.
The ruling DMK and Kamal Haasan’s party MNM have formed an alliance, under which DMK will contest three seats and MNM has been allotted one seat. Kamal Haasan is the MNM candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat.
DMK Announces Three Other Candidates
Alongside Kamal Haasan, DMK has named three other candidates: Senior Advocate P. Wilson, Former Union Minister S.R. Shivalingam, and renowned Tamil poet and writer Rokkiah Malik, also known as Kavignar Salma.
- P. Wilson holds degrees in B.Sc. and B.L., is a sitting Rajya Sabha MP, and has represented Tamil Nadu in several high-profile legal cases.
- S.R. Shivalingam is a senior DMK leader and former Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, reflecting DMK’s strategy of balancing legal and administrative experience in the upper house.
- Rokkiah Malik (Kavignar Salma) is a celebrated voice in Tamil literature known for her poetry and novels. She has received multiple literary awards.
With the ruling DMK holding the required majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, all four candidates are expected to secure their Rajya Sabha seats.
