Karnataka Introduces Alcohol-Based Excise Duty System
Karnataka has become the first state in India to implement an alcohol-based excise duty system for beverages. The new policy came into effect on May 11 this year.
Along with this reform, the state government has also revised liquor pricing regulations and removed the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) system for alcoholic beverages.
New Pricing Structure for Alcoholic Beverages
Under the new framework, manufacturers are now allowed to set product prices based on market demand and alcohol content rather than fixed government-controlled pricing.
Excise duty will now be determined based on the alcohol content in beverages instead of brand value, marking a significant shift in taxation policy.
Impact of the Reform
The reform is expected to bring greater flexibility in pricing and align taxation more closely with consumption levels, making Karnataka a pioneer in excise duty innovation in India.
