23 जून को समृद्ध सांस्कृतिक विरासत के लिए मशहूर केरल के कोझिकोड को यूनेस्को ने आधिकारिक तौर पर भारत का पहला सिटी ऑफ लिटरेचर घोषित किया। अक्टूबर 2023 में कोझिकोड ने यूनेस्को क्रिएटिव सिटीज नेटवर्क (यूसीसीएन) की साहित्य श्रेणी में स्थान बनाया था।
कोझिकोड ने कोलकाता जैसे समृद्ध सांस्कृतिक इतिहास वाले शहरों को पछाड़कर यूनेस्को से 'सिटी आफ लिटरेचर की उपाधि हासिल की है।
कोझिकोड में 500 से अधिक पुस्तकालय हैं। यह कई दशकों से प्रसिद्ध मलयालम लेखक एमटी वासुदेवन नायर की साहित्यिक गतिविधियों का केंद्र रहा है। भारत से ग्वालियर और कोझिकोड उन 55 नए शहरों में से हैं जो यूसीसीएन में शामिल हुए हैं। जहां मध्य प्रदेश के ग्वालियर ने संगीत श्रेणी में प्रतिष्ठित सूची में जगह बनाई, वहीं कोझिकोड ने साहित्यश्रेणी में जगह बनाई।
दुनिया के जिन अन्य शहरों को यूनेस्को से टैग प्राप्त हुआ है, उनमें शिल्प और लोक कला श्रेणी में बुखारा, मीडिया आर्ट्स श्रेणी में कैसाब्लांका, डिजाइन श्रेणी में चोंग्किंग, फिल्म श्रेणी में काठमांडू शामिल हैं।
On June 23, Kozhikode in Kerala, famous for its rich cultural heritage, was officially declared India's first City of Literature by UNESCO. In October 2023, Kozhikode made it to the literature category of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
Kozhikode has won the title of 'City of Literature' from UNESCO by beating cities with rich cultural history like Kolkata.
Kozhikode has more than 500 libraries. It has been the center of literary activities of famous Malayalam writer MT Vasudevan Nair for several decades. Gwalior and Kozhikode are among the 55 new cities from India that have joined the UCCN. While Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh made it to the prestigious list in the music category, Kozhikode made it to the literature category.
Other cities in the world that have received the tag from UNESCO include Bukhara in the Crafts and Folk Arts category, Casablanca in the Media Arts category, Chongqing in the Design category, Kathmandu in the Film category.
