Madhya Pradesh Plans Uniform Civil Code Bill Committee

Madhya Pradesh to Form Committee for Uniform Civil Code Bill

A committee is likely to be formed in Madhya Pradesh to draft the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill. Former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai is expected to be appointed as the chairperson.

The committee will include 5–6 members such as former High Court judges, retired IAS officers, social workers, advocates, university representatives, and senior lawyers.

The state government has gathered information from Gujarat and Uttarakhand, where the UCC Bill was prepared under the leadership of Ranjana Prakash Desai. Based on this, Madhya Pradesh is also planning to assign her the responsibility. A meeting at the administrative level is expected soon.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, while addressing a gathering in Jabalpur, criticized the Congress party, stating that the country has paid the price for many of its past decisions, which are now being corrected.

He added that the nation and the state are moving towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code. Referring to the slogan “One Nation, One Symbol, One Leader” from 1951, he said that in the future, laws should be equal for all citizens regardless of religion, caste, or social status.

Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Vishwas Sarang stated that uniformity in law is essential for present and future generations. He emphasized that laws should not differentiate based on caste or religion and accused Congress of divisive politics and using certain communities as vote banks.

Why Ranjana Prakash Desai?
In Gujarat, a committee led by Ranjana Prakash Desai was formed in March 2025. The panel included retired IAS officer C.L. Meena, senior advocate R.C. Kodekar, former Vice-Chancellor Dr. Dakshesh Thakar, and social worker Geeta Shroff.

The committee prepared the bill within one year after conducting multiple meetings, gathering public opinions, and consulting representatives from various communities. The bill was passed without any changes. Madhya Pradesh is planning a similar approach.
