Madhya Pradesh Ranks Second in Road Accidents and Fourth in Road Deaths: NCRB 2024 Report

According to the latest NCRB (National Crime Records Bureau) 2024 report, Madhya Pradesh has emerged as a major concern in road safety statistics in India.

The state recorded 55,711 road accidents, making it the second-highest in the country after Tamil Nadu, which recorded 67,526 accidents.

In terms of fatalities, Madhya Pradesh ranked fourth in India after Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra, with 16,831 deaths reported in road accidents.

Major Causes of Road Accidents

The report highlights that not wearing helmets and seat belts remains one of the biggest causes of deaths in the state.

  • About 53% of deaths involved two-wheeler riders.
  • Nearly 75% of them were not wearing helmets.
  • Speeding caused 31,554 accidents leading to 8,429 deaths.
  • Drunk driving contributed significantly to fatalities.
  • Infrastructure issues caused 126 accidents and 15 deaths.

On national highways, 4,711 deaths were recorded, accounting for 7.7% of total deaths in India on such roads. State highways reported 3,425 deaths.

Other Safety Concerns

  • Highest share (13%) of drunk-driving deaths in India came from Madhya Pradesh.
  • 52 people per lakh population are affected by road accidents in the state.

Non-Traffic Accident Deaths

In 2024, a total of 45,695 deaths occurred due to non-traffic accidents in Madhya Pradesh, accounting for 9.8% of India’s total.

  • Lightning strikes caused 577 deaths (highest in India).
  • Electric shock incidents led to 1,495 deaths.
  • Heatwave and lightning together caused 1,085 deaths.
  • Sudden deaths due to heart attacks: 2,115 cases.
  • Structural collapse incidents: 177 cases leading to 179 deaths.
  • Bridge collapse: 5 incidents causing 5 deaths.

Child Crime Statistics (Alarming Trend)

NCRB data also highlights serious concerns regarding juvenile crime in Madhya Pradesh.

  • 3,474 crimes committed by minors (3rd highest in India).
  • 4,109 accused minors involved in cases.
  • 260 rape cases involving juveniles (highest in India).
  • 22 cases of suicide abetment.
  • 101 murder cases involving minors.
  • 12 organized crime involvement cases (highest in India).

Although there is a slight decline compared to 2022 and 2023, the overall situation remains a serious concern for law enforcement and policymakers.
