Madhya Pradesh Records Highest Wheat Procurement from Farmers in India

Madhya Pradesh has once again surpassed Punjab in wheat procurement under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system. So far, wheat has been procured from more than 10 lakh farmers in the state, the highest number in the country.

Punjab, despite having a procurement target of 132 lakh tonnes — which is 32 lakh tonnes higher than Madhya Pradesh — has purchased produce from around 7.5 lakh farmers so far. In Haryana, approximately 9.2 lakh farmers have sold wheat to the government at MSP.

Wheat Procurement Gains Momentum in Madhya Pradesh

Although wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh started later than expected, the process has now gained momentum. Nearly 5 lakh tonnes of wheat are being purchased daily across the state.

Till now, around 63 lakh tonnes of wheat have been procured at the rate of Rs 2,625 per quintal. Payments worth approximately Rs 11,610 crore have already been made to farmers.

This year, the state has been assigned a procurement target of 100 lakh tonnes of wheat. A total of 19.04 lakh farmers have registered themselves to sell their produce under the procurement system.

National Procurement Scenario and Deadlines

Looking at the national scenario, Uttar Pradesh has procured wheat from around 2 lakh farmers so far, with May 15 being the last date for procurement in the state.

Rajasthan has purchased wheat from approximately 1.67 lakh farmers, and procurement there will continue until May 31.

In Punjab, May 10 was the final date for wheat procurement, while Haryana will continue procurement under MSP until May 15. In Madhya Pradesh, wheat procurement will continue until May 23.
