Mamata Banerjee Increases Women’s Pension by ₹500, Unemployment Allowance of ₹1500 for Youth

Amid election tensions and preparations, the West Bengal government led by CM Mamata Banerjee presented the 2026-27 interim budget on 5 February 2026, totaling ₹4.06 lakh crore. The budget includes major announcements for women and youth.

Women’s Pension Hike under Lakshmi Bhandar

The Lakshmi Bhandar scheme provides monthly financial aid to women. Under the new budget, pensions have been increased by ₹500. Now, SC/ST women will receive ₹1,700 per month, while women in the general category will get ₹1,500 per month. This scheme benefits women aged 25-60 years in the EWS category.

Youth Unemployment Allowance

The government has announced the Youva Sathi scheme to provide ₹1,500 per month to unemployed youth aged 21-40. The allowance will be given until the individual gets a job or for a maximum period of five years.

Other Budget Announcements

The budget also includes an increase of ₹1,000 in the monthly allowance for ASHA and Anganwadi workers.

West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026

The West Bengal assembly term ends in May 2026, with elections likely in March-April. The state has 294 constituencies. Recently, CM Mamata Banerjee had a legal dispute with the Election Commission over SIR, with the Supreme Court asking for responses from the Election Commission and the West Bengal EC by 9 February.
