Marriage Registration in Uttarakhand Now Chargeable Under Uniform Civil Code
Marriage registration in Uttarakhand will now require payment of a prescribed fee, as the exemption period and extended deadline provided under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) have officially come to an end.
From now on, marriages must be registered within the stipulated time frame as laid down under the provisions of the Uniform Civil Code. Failure to do so will attract late registration penalties determined by the state government.
Uniform Civil Code Implemented in January 2025
The Uniform Civil Code was implemented in Uttarakhand on January 27, 2025. At the time of its implementation, the government introduced a structured system for fees and late fees related to marriage registration, divorce registration, and will registration.
Marriage Registration Fees
As per the UCC provisions:
- Standard marriage registration fee is ₹250.
- Immediate (tatkal) marriage registration fee is ₹2,500.
Additionally, couples were given a six-month window from the implementation of the UCC to complete marriage registration without penalty.
Mandatory Registration of Past Marriages
Under the rules, registration of all marriages solemnized since March 26, 2010 has been made mandatory.
Initially, to raise public awareness, the government provided two extensions of six months each, offering complete exemption from registration fees and late penalties.
Exemption Period Now Over
Marriage registration was kept free of cost until January 26, 2026, and late fees were also waived for one year.
Now that one full year has passed since the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code, and no further extension orders have been issued by the government, it has become clear that marriage registration within the prescribed timeline is mandatory.
Failure to comply will result in the imposition of late fees as per UCC regulations.
