Malcolm Lines in Mhow to Be Renamed After Havildar Piru Singh Shekhawat

Mhow, located near Indore, is considered the backbone of the Indian Army. It is home to premier military institutions such as the Infantry School, Army War College, and the College of Military Telecommunication Engineering.

Military officers from several countries come to Mhow for training, which is why it is often referred to as the “Brain Place” of the Indian Army.

Indian Army Renames British-Era Establishments

In a significant decision, the Indian Army has renamed 246 of its establishments that previously carried names from the British era. The new names honor bravery award recipients, war heroes, and prominent military leaders, recognizing their contribution to the nation.

The renaming includes 124 roads, 77 residential colonies, 27 buildings and military facilities, and 18 other amenities such as parks, training areas, sports grounds, gates, and helipads.

Malcolm Lines Gets a New Identity

As part of this initiative, Malcolm Lines in the Mhow cantonment has been renamed Piru Singh Lines, in honor of Param Vir Chakra awardee Havildar Piru Singh Shekhawat.

Earlier, several gates and messes near the Infantry School and Army War College in Mhow were also renamed, replacing British officers’ names with those of Indian war heroes.

Mhow: The ‘Brain Place’ of the Indian Army

Mhow was established by the British in 1818 after acquiring land from the Holkar dynasty to meet their strategic military needs.

In 1817, the British and the Holkar army fought the Battle of Mahidpur. Following the war, the Treaty of Mandsaur was signed on January 6, 1818, granting the British permission to station their forces in the Malwa region.

Today, however, Mhow stands as a symbol of India’s military strength and strategic excellence. With its world-class training institutions and global military engagement, it continues to play a vital role in shaping the leadership of the Indian Army.
