Miss World 2025 is a Cancer Survivor, Now Raising Global Awareness

On June 1, Miss World 2025, Opal Suchata Chuangsri, a cancer survivor, used her platform to spread awareness about cancer prevention. Studies reveal that up to 90% of cancer cases can be prevented through lifestyle changes.

Cancer Is Not Always Uncontrollable

The word "cancer" strikes fear in the hearts of many. It has claimed countless lives, yet many have also bravely survived it. Contrary to popular belief, cancer is not as uncontrollable as it may seem. Opal Suchata’s personal journey highlights this reality. At just 16 years old, she discovered a lump in her breast and underwent surgery. Though the lump was benign, the emotional impact on her young mind was profound.

"The day I found a lump at the age of 16, my world stood still," Opal shared. "Even though it was benign, the fear was very real."

Only 5–10% of Cancer Cases Are Genetic

According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), only 5–10% of cancer cases are hereditary. While genetic cases are harder to prevent, 90–95% are linked to environmental factors, diet, and lifestyle choices. This means that adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of cancer.

Early detection is key—most cancer cases can be treated if diagnosed in time. Public figures like Yuvraj Singh, Manisha Koirala, Sonali Bendre, Tahira Kashyap, Anurag Basu, and Rakesh Roshan are living proof that cancer can be defeated.

Sadly, nearly 80% of cancer cases in India are detected at advanced stages, making treatment extremely difficult. In such cases, 70% of patients die within one year of diagnosis. Cancer has now become the second leading cause of death in India after heart disease—a dramatic shift from two decades ago when it ranked seventh.
