Nari Shakti Vandan Breaks Political Party Barriers in India
The Nari Shakti Vandan Act introduced by the Modi government has created a significant political impact, breaking barriers between political parties to a large extent.
Women leaders from opposition parties have openly supported this initiative. Former President Pratibha Patil called it a historic move, while BSP chief Mayawati also welcomed the decision.
Demand for Separate Quota
Mayawati, however, demanded a separate quota for SC, ST, and OBC women within the 33% reservation for women in Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
Special Parliamentary Session
The three-day special session of Parliament starting from April 16 includes the Nari Shakti Vandan Amendment Bill and the Delimitation Bill.
While the opposition has raised concerns over delimitation and formed a joint strategy against the government, several women leaders from opposition parties have extended support to the women reservation bill.
Support from Pratibha Patil
Former President Pratibha Patil wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi supporting the bill, calling it historic. She stated that this constitutional amendment will strengthen democracy and ensure greater representation of women in legislative institutions.
She further emphasized that true empowerment of women can only be achieved when they are given equal opportunities in national decision-making processes.
Mayawati's Stand
BSP chief Mayawati stated that although her party supports 50% reservation for women, they also welcome the 33% reservation decision despite its delay.
She also reiterated the demand for a separate quota for SC, ST, and OBC women within the reservation system.
Other Political Reactions
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar attended the Nari Shakti Vandan conference held on April 13 in support of the initiative.
Congress leader Dr. Jaya Thakur has also filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking early implementation of women reservation without waiting for delimitation.
