Baldev Waghmare Awarded the National Handicraft Award

Baldev Waghmare, a traditional tribal artisan from Betul district of Madhya Pradesh, was awarded the prestigious National Handicraft Award by President Draupadi Murmu on December 16. The award grants national recognition to the Bharewa craft. This craft has also been honored with the GI Tag recently.

President Draupadi Murmu presented the award to Waghmare during a ceremony held in New Delhi, acknowledging his exceptional contribution to the Bharewa craft. This award marks the significant national acknowledgment of Bharewa artisans and their craftsmanship.

Features of Bharewa Craft

Bharewa artisans specialize in creating symbolic depictions of gods and producing various jewelry pieces, including rings, daggers, and ornaments required for the Gondi community's marriage ceremonies. They also create special ornaments like wristbands and armlets, which are specifically made for spiritual leaders or traditional healers.

Besides these, Bharewa artisans craft a wide array of decorative items such as bullock carts, peacock-shaped lamps, bells, anklets, and glass frames, all of which have gained international recognition in the handicraft market.

Baldev Waghmare has played a significant role in preventing the decline in the number of Bharewa artisans. Through his dedication and craftsmanship, this traditional art form has found renewed recognition, bringing it into the global handicraft market.
