Several financial rules have changed with the arrival of the new year 2025. These include rules related to pensions, UPI payments, fixed deposits (FD), and visa regulations. It is important to be aware of these changes before planning for the new year. The biggest benefit of these changes will be for pensioners, who will now be able to withdraw their pension from any bank branch in the country.
Pensioners to Benefit from New Rules
From January 1, 2025, the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) will simplify the withdrawal process for pension funds. The Central Pension Payment System (CPPS), part of the IT modernization project CITES 2.01 of EPFO, will be implemented starting January 1, 2025. As per this, the 78 lakh members of the Employees' Pension Scheme will be able to withdraw their pension from any bank branch in India. In addition, changes are expected, including the facility for PF fund withdrawal through ATMs and the removal of the EPF contribution limit.
Changes in Fixed Deposit Rules
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made changes to the fixed deposit rules for Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) and Housing Finance Firms. These new rules will take effect in January 2025. As per the new guidelines, FD holders in NBFCs will be allowed to withdraw smaller amounts (less than ₹10,000) before maturity. Additionally, FD holders can withdraw the entire amount if they are diagnosed with a serious illness.
Changes in UPI Payment Rules
From January 1, 2025, the RBI will enable UPI payments through third-party full-KYC prepaid payment instruments (PPIs or prepaid cards). This change will bring more flexibility to UPI payments. People will now be able to make UPI payments using prepaid cards as well. Furthermore, the transaction limit for the UPI 123Pay service, aimed at feature phone users, will be increased from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 from January 1, 2025.
