Offline Digital Rupee Launched by RBI
At the Global FinTech Fest 2025 held in Mumbai, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) launched the Offline Digital Rupee (e-Rupee). This facility allows users in rural and remote areas to make payments even without internet access, providing an experience similar to digital cash.
The Digital Rupee or e-Rupee is India's Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), which is the digital form of real currency. It is issued directly by the RBI and stored in secure digital wallets provided by banks.
Users can instantly send or receive money using the e-Rupee, and a bank account is not required for every transaction. Payments can also be made for commercial purposes by scanning UPI QR codes through the e-Rupee wallet.
