निर्वाचन आयोग द्वारा जारी नवीनतम मतदाता सूची के अनुसार देश में 1.85 करोड़ मतदाताओं की उम्र 80 वर्ष से अधिक है जिनमें ‘शतायु’ (जो 100 वर्ष और उससे अधिक आयु के हैं) मतदाताओं की संख्या 2.38 लाख है।विधि मंत्रालय द्वारा जारी गजट अधिसूचना के अनुसार, 85 वर्ष से अधिक आयु वाले मतदाताओं को डाक मतपत्र की सुविधा देने के लिए चुनाव संचालन नियम, 1961 में संशोधन किया गया है।
