One Nation, One Election Bill to be Presented in Lok Sabha, BJP Issues Whip to MPs
The 'One Nation, One Election' Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill is set to be presented in Parliament on December 17. On December 16, BJP issued a three-line whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs. BJP's Chief Whip mentioned that important legislative discussions are to take place in both Houses of Parliament.
The 'One Nation, One Election' Bill seeks to conduct Lok Sabha and state assembly elections together. It will be referred to a joint committee of both Houses after presentation.
A senior government official revealed that Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will introduce the bill. Following that, he will request Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for detailed discussions. The committee will be constituted in proportion to the number of MPs from different parties.
The bill also includes provisions for cases when a state assembly election cannot be held along with the parliamentary elections. According to Section 2, Subsection 5 of the bill, "If the Election Commission believes that a state assembly election cannot be held alongside the Lok Sabha elections, it can request the President to issue an order for holding the state assembly elections on a later date."
