Pakistan Faces Tough Questions at UNSC Over Pahalgam Attack

UN Security Council Holds Closed-Door Meeting in New York on Pahalgam Attack

Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack, Pakistan had requested a closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on May 5, 2025. However, the meeting turned against Pakistan, as member nations raised tough questions regarding its role in the attack.

According to sources cited by news agency ANI, UNSC members strongly questioned Pakistan on the involvement of terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba in the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 people—most of them tourists. The members also dismissed Pakistan's narrative of a "false flag operation" by India.

No Outcome or Statement from UNSC

The closed-door meeting ended without any resolution, statement, or press release. The session, initiated by Pakistan, ended in diplomatic embarrassment as member states reportedly shifted the spotlight back on Pakistan’s support for terrorism.

Condemnation of Attack and Concern Over Targeting Tourists

Several UNSC members condemned the terror attack in the Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam. Some countries specifically raised concerns about religiously motivated targeting of tourists. The brutality and location of the attack raised global alarms.

Concerns Over Pakistan's Missile Tests

The meeting also saw concerns raised over Pakistan’s recent missile launches. On May 5, Pakistan tested its Fateh missile with a 120 km range, following an earlier test of the Abdali missile, which has a 450 km range. These were identified as contributing to regional instability.

The UNSC, composed of 15 nations, discussed the overall India-Pakistan tension but concluded the session without endorsing Pakistan’s stance, dealing a diplomatic blow to its narrative campaign.
