Places of Worship Act 1991
The Places of Worship Act, 1991 was implemented on 15th August 1991 to maintain the existing status of religious places in India as they were on 15th August 1947. According to this Act, the status of any religious place as it was on 15th August 1947 will remain unchanged.
This Act applies to all religious places, meaning that a Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, or any other religious place cannot be converted into a place of worship for another religion.
Section 3 of this Act states that religious places will be preserved in the same form in which they existed on 15th August 1947. If it is proven that the current place was built by demolishing a place of another religion, its current form cannot be altered.
Under Section 4(1), if a place of worship has been altered after 15th August 1947, legal action can be taken, but no new lawsuit or legal action can be initiated concerning the status of the religious place before 15th August 1947.
Section 5 specifies that this Act does not apply to the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute.
Violating Section 3 of this Act can lead to a punishment of three years in prison and a fine.
