PM Modi Honored with Ghana's National Award, Emphasizes Diplomacy Over War
On July 2, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ghana, marking the first visit by an Indian PM to the West African country in three decades. Upon his arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, he was warmly welcomed by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and given a guard of honor. Children chanted “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” as part of the traditional reception.
PM Modi was conferred with Ghana's national honor and expressed gratitude on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians. He dedicated the award to India's youth, cultural diversity, and the historic ties between India and Ghana.
India-Ghana Bilateral Relations
Following discussions with President Mahama, both countries signed four key agreements focusing on military training, maritime security, cyber defense, and defense supplies. Modi announced a target to double India-Ghana trade in the next five years.
He emphasized security through solidarity and condemned terrorism as an enemy of humanity. He also thanked Ghana for supporting India in the global fight against terrorism.
“This is Not an Era of War” – PM Modi
Speaking about global conflicts, Modi reiterated that issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, not war. He and President Mahama expressed deep concern over situations in the Middle East and Europe.
Five-Nation Tour & Global South Agenda
This visit is part of Modi’s five-nation, eight-day tour covering Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. Ahead of the tour, he highlighted the importance of strengthening ties with the Global South.
Modi plans to discuss cooperation in critical minerals, solar energy, electronics, and EV sectors with Argentina, Ghana, and Namibia, which hold vast reserves of essential resources. In Trinidad and Tobago, he aims to deepen ties with the Indian diaspora, especially with the nation’s President Christine Carla Kangaloo and PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar, both of Indian origin.
BRICS Summit in Brazil
Modi's visit to Brazil will include participation in the BRICS Summit. Though leaders of China and Russia won’t attend, heads of states from Iran, Indonesia, UAE, and other invited countries will be present. Bilateral meetings with several global leaders are also scheduled.
The following day, Modi will be the state guest of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He intends to strengthen bilateral ties and amplify the voice of the Global South through these engagements.
Addressing Parliaments
During this tour, Modi will also address the parliaments of Ghana, Namibia, and Trinidad, showcasing India’s commitment to parliamentary democracy and deep-rooted cultural diplomacy.
