PM Modi Warns of Growing Obesity Crisis in India by 2050
Every year on April 7, World Health Day is celebrated. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern about the increasing problem of obesity in the country and urged citizens to adopt a healthy lifestyle to prevent obesity. He stated that prioritizing personal fitness will contribute significantly to India's goal of becoming a developed nation.
On April 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a video on X (formerly Twitter). In the caption, he wrote, "On World Health Day, let us pledge to create a healthier world. Our government will continue to focus on healthcare and will invest in various sectors for the well-being of people. Good health is the foundation of any prosperous society."
In the video message, the Prime Minister reminded everyone of the age-old saying, "Health is wealth" and expressed concern about the growing obesity crisis in India. He said, "These days, our lifestyle is becoming a major threat to our health. According to a recent report, by 2050, over 440 million Indians will suffer from obesity. This is a matter of concern; it could turn into a major crisis."
Call to Reduce Oil Consumption
In his message, PM Modi also emphasized adopting healthy eating habits, such as reducing the use of oil, which he said is not only a personal decision but a social responsibility. He urged immediate steps to tackle this issue and gave a simple suggestion: "I want to make a promise today that we all reduce 10% of the oil in our cooking. This will be a big step toward reducing obesity."
Make Exercise a Part of Lifestyle
He also encouraged people to include regular physical activity in their daily routine. He said, "Additionally, we must make exercise a part of our lifestyle. If we keep ourselves fit, it will be a significant step towards a developed India." The Prime Minister has always been at the forefront of raising awareness about obesity and lifestyle-related diseases.
PM Modi's Focus on Health in "Mann Ki Baat"
In an episode of his monthly radio program "Mann Ki Baat," Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised India's progress in the global sports arena and highlighted the importance of a healthy lifestyle. In his address, he referenced a concerning health trend based on WHO data, showing the rising cases of obesity in India. He said, "One in every eight people in India is affected by obesity. In recent years, its prevalence has doubled, and childhood obesity has increased fourfold."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned that obesity can lead to serious health issues such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. However, he emphasized that small but effective changes in lifestyle can help reduce these risks.
