Priyanka Gandhi May Join JPC for One Nation-One Election Bill
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi is likely to join the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed for the One Nation-One Election Bill. According to sources, Congress leaders Manish Tewari, Sukhdev Bhagat, and Randeep Surjewala may also be part of the JPC.
The bill, initially tabled in the Lok Sabha, was later referred to the JPC for further discussion. The opposition criticized the bill, calling it a violation of the federal structure's essence. Speaking to the media, Priyanka Gandhi termed the bill unconstitutional and reiterated Congress' opposition to it.
Voting in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Requirements
In the Lok Sabha, electronic voting resulted in 220 votes in favor and 149 votes against the bill. After opposition protests, a second vote by paper ballot was conducted, with 269 votes in favor and 198 votes against.
The bill requires a two-thirds majority for a constitutional amendment. With 543 members in the Lok Sabha, at least 362 votes are needed. The NDA currently holds only 292 seats. In the Rajya Sabha, a two-thirds majority would require 164 votes, but the NDA has only 112 members.
