Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal scientist Prof. Vishal Rai has earned fame across the country by discovering medicines that directly attack cancer cells. Prof. Rai has worked on protein engineering and discovered medicines that directly attack cancer cells. With the help of antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) technology, these medicines will now directly attack cancer cells. This will make cancer treatment easier along with the damage caused by chemotherapy. Along with them, Prof. R. Mahalakshmi of the Department of Biological Sciences of IISER has also been awarded the Science Yuva Puraskar.
Mental diseases are caused by the inactivity of mitochondria
Prof. R Mahalakshmi has been awarded this prize for her research on mitochondrial membrane protein folding and its role in health. Mahalakshmi hails from Coimbatore. She has been working as a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at IISER since 2009. The outer membrane of mitochondria contains essential proteins, whose inactivity can lead to many types of mental illnesses. The research also explains the reasons for their inactivity.
