India’s Best-Ever Performance in QS World University Rankings 2026
The QS World University Rankings 2026 have been released, and this year marks India’s best performance to date. A total of 54 Indian institutions have been included in the global rankings, which feature over 1500 universities from 106 countries.
Back in 2015, only 11 Indian institutions were part of the QS Rankings. The 2026 edition highlights India’s rapid progress in higher education, placing it just behind the United States, the United Kingdom, and China in terms of the number of institutions listed.
IIT Delhi Achieves Outstanding Rank
IIT Delhi has achieved a remarkable rank in the QS 2026 list. It is now placed at 123rd position, a significant jump from its 150th position last year. It is among the two Indian institutes featured in the top 150 globally.
IIT Bombay Included in Top 150
Alongside IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay also features in the top 150 universities. However, its rank has slightly dropped to 129th from last year’s 118th.
IIT Madras Makes Its Debut in Top 200
IIT Madras has entered the top 200 global universities for the first time. It is ranked at 180th position, a major improvement from its 227th position last year.
India's Growing Presence in QS Rankings
India’s representation in QS Rankings has steadily increased. In 2024 and 2025, 46 Indian institutions were listed. In 2026, this number has grown to 54 institutions, showcasing India’s consistent progress in the global higher education landscape.
