Ramanagara District Renamed to Bengaluru South by Karnataka Cabinet

On May 22, the Karnataka Cabinet approved the renaming of the neighboring district of Ramanagara, near Bengaluru, to “Bengaluru South.” Despite the name change, Ramanagara, which is located about 50 kilometers from Bengaluru city, will remain the district headquarters.

The district includes Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli taluks. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar stated, “We have reviewed all rules, regulations, and amendments. Ramanagara was originally a part of Bengaluru district. Today, the cabinet decided to rename it Bengaluru South. An official order will be issued soon.”

Shivakumar, who hails from the now-renamed district and also serves as Karnataka Congress President, added that this is a proud moment for the region. When asked whether the central government opposed the move, he clarified, “The Centre has no authority over this matter. It’s a state subject. We only needed to inform them, and we did.”

The Ramanagara district was originally carved out in August 2007 during the coalition government led by former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy of the JD(S)-BJP alliance. Kumaraswamy had earlier threatened to protest if the name change proposal moved forward.
