Ruby Thakur Becomes Nepal’s Youngest Deputy Speaker
Ruby Kumari Thakur, aged 26, has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives, making her the youngest to hold this position. She secured a total of 229 votes in the election.
Her victory is considered significant as a symbol of young leadership and Madhesi representation in Nepal’s politics. Coming from a modest background, Thakur entered politics through determination and education.
The election was held in Kathmandu on April 10. Ruby Thakur had earlier been elected as a Member of Parliament on March 5 from the Labour Culture Party.
In the parliamentary voting, she received 229 votes, while her opponent Saraswati Lama managed only five votes. A total of 22 votes were cast as “None of the Above,” indicating that some members chose not to support any candidate.
Out of the 275-member House, 256 lawmakers participated in the voting process. Following the vote, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal officially announced her victory.
