Significant Drop in Enrollment in 2023-24: 16 Million Fewer Girls

   

School enrollment for the 2023-24 academic year has dropped by 37 million compared to the previous year. This information comes from the UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education) data managed by the Ministry of Education. The data shows a notable decrease of 16 million in the number of girls enrolled, while 21 million fewer boys are enrolled this year.

   

The UDISE Plus platform is a data aggregation tool managed by the Ministry of Education to collect school education data from across the country. In the 2022-23 academic year, the number of enrolled students was 251.7 million, while in 2023-24, it has decreased to 248 million. Among these, the number of girls has decreased by 16 million, and boys' enrollment has decreased by 21 million.

   

Minority representation in school enrollments was approximately 20%, with 79.6% of minorities being Muslim, 10% Christian, 6.9% Sikh, 2.2% Buddhist, 1.3% Jain, and 0.1% Parsi. Nationally, according to UDISE Plus, 26.9% of students are from the general category, 18% from Scheduled Castes, 9.9% from Scheduled Tribes, and 45.2% from Other Backward Classes.
