On January 7, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that modern systems introduced under three new criminal laws and technological frameworks like 'Bharatpol' would enable law enforcement agencies to bring fugitives, who fled abroad after committing crimes in India, to justice.

This statement was made during the launch of the new portal 'Bharatpol' developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for swift coordination with Indian agencies on issues related to Interpol.

Shah explained that the three new criminal laws introduced by the (Narendra) Modi government include provisions for prosecuting accused individuals in their absence. He mentioned that this provision would ensure judicial procedures, making it easier to prosecute fugitive criminals in absentia through court orders.

He further mentioned that the process of extraditing convicted criminals from foreign countries would become simpler with this provision.

Shah said, “Together with the capabilities of the Bharatpol portal, this new measure will empower Indian law enforcement agencies to bring fugitives to court, no matter where they are hiding.”

'Bharatpol' will bring together all central and state law enforcement agencies on a shared portal, streamlining requests for international assistance through Interpol, including Red Corner Notices and other color-based Interpol notices.
