Tariq Rahman Takes Command of Bangladesh, Breaks Tradition at Oath Ceremony
On February 17, Tariq Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. This marked the end of the 18-month interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, during which the country experienced political uncertainty and unrest.
The oath-taking ceremony was held in the open grounds of the “South Plaza” of the National Parliament, in the presence of Bangladesh’s top political and military leadership.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented India at the ceremony. He was accompanied by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
