Third Launch Pad to Be Built at Sriharikota
Sriharikota's Satish Dhawan Space Centre currently has two launch pads. The central government has now approved the construction of a third launch pad, which will elevate ISRO's upcoming space missions.
The central cabinet has made a significant decision to enhance India's space sector. The government has given approval for the third launch pad at Sriharikota’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The estimated cost of this project is around ₹3985 crore. It is expected to be completed in the next 48 hours. Currently, Sriharikota has two launch pads.
According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the proposed third launch pad will have higher capacity and will cater to the needs of next-generation launch vehicles (NGLV). It is designed to launch heavy satellites into orbit.
The third launch pad at Sriharikota will be a milestone for India’s space programs. It will be constructed alongside the second launch pad to maximize the use of existing infrastructure. Once the third launch pad is operational, a greater number of satellites and spacecraft can be launched. It will have a higher capacity compared to the existing launch pads, accelerating India's future space programs.
ISRO is currently dependent on two launch pads: FLP (First Launch Pad) and SLP (Second Launch Pad). The FLP was commissioned nearly 30 years ago and still supports launches for PSLV and SSLV. The SLP has been in operation for about 20 years and has supported key missions, including Chandrayaan-3.
The proposed third launch pad at Sriharikota is being prepared with future missions in mind. It is expected that ISRO will launch its human lunar mission from this pad by 2040. Additionally, this pad could be used for launching the Indian Space Station. For these missions, ISRO required a next-gen launch pad, which will now be provided by this third pad.
