Trump Announces Tariffs on 7 More Countries, Brazil Excluded

On July 10, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on goods imported from Brazil. He shared this decision through a letter on Truth Social. In the letter, Trump condemned the ongoing lawsuit against Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, who is also a friend of his.

Trump stated that the lawsuit against Bolsonaro is an "international embarrassment" for Brazil and described it as a "witch hunt" (accusations without solid evidence).

Bolsonaro is allegedly accused of attempting a coup in relation to the January 8, 2023, riots in Brazil's capital, Brasília.

In 2019, former President Bolsonaro had met with Trump and gifted him a jersey from Brazil's national football team.

Trump said that the lawsuit against Bolsonaro should be terminated immediately, and also criticized attacks on free elections in Brazil and efforts to control freedom of expression in the United States.

Trump declared that starting August 1, 2025, all products imported from Brazil to the U.S. will be subject to a 50% tariff.

In addition, Trump announced tariffs on seven other countries, including the Philippines, Brunei, Algeria, Moldova, Iraq, and Libya. The tariffs on Algeria, Iraq, Libya, and Sri Lanka will be 30%, while Brunei and Moldova will face 25%, and the Philippines will have a 20% tariff.

Trump had previously announced tariffs on 14 countries, including South Korea and Japan, just a day before this new announcement. This will apply starting August 1, with some countries facing 25% tariffs and others up to 40%.

Trump's administration formally notified the affected countries through official letters, stating that these tariffs are necessary to correct the trade imbalance between the U.S. and these countries.
