Trump Announces New Tariffs: 40% on South Africa, 25% on Japan Effective August 1
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new tariffs on imports from Japan, South Korea, and twelve other countries. The tariffs, ranging from 25% to 40%, will take effect from August 1, 2025.
Trump stated that these tariffs are essential to address the long-standing trade imbalances and trade barriers that have led to a persistent U.S. trade deficit. He emphasized that these measures are necessary to protect the U.S. economy and national security.
The additional 12 countries affected include Myanmar, Laos, South Africa, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Tunisia, Indonesia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Trump warned that any retaliatory tariffs by the affected nations would be met with even higher U.S. duties. Letters sent to the respective foreign leaders via Trump’s Truth Social platform outlined the new rates, stating the figures are “much lower than necessary” to offset trade imbalances.
The administration also clarified that exemptions would be granted if products are manufactured within the United States.
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt stated that Trump is setting these rates personally and that tailored trade strategies are being created for every nation.
This marks a shift away from traditional diplomatic negotiations, with Trump opting for unilateral decisions announced directly on social media.
The new tariff announcement coincides with the expiration of a 90-day suspension on earlier proposed tariff hikes. The original base tariff was 10%, with some countries facing increases up to 70%.
