Trump Threatens 200% Tariff on French Wine Over Gaza Peace Board Dispute
US President Donald Trump has started a sharp dispute with France. He has threatened to impose a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne. This comes after France rejected an invitation to join Trump's proposed "Board of Peace."
Trump shared a private message from French President Emmanuel Macron on Truth Social, which discussed the Greenland issue. Trump's attack came after France declined to participate in the Board of Peace.
About the Board of Peace
The board was originally intended for the reconstruction of war-torn Gaza. However, its charter now appears not to be limited to Gaza alone. Trump is positioning it as a major platform for global peace.
What Trump Said
Speaking to journalists, Trump said, "I will put a 200% tariff on their wine and champagne. And they will join. But they don’t have to join."
He was referring to Macron. Trump indicated that if France shows hostility, the tariff would force Macron to participate in the Gaza Board.
Macron's Private Message
Trump posted Macron's private message on Truth Social. Macron wrote that the two leaders agree on Iran and Syria issues but are puzzled about Trump's actions regarding Greenland.
The message also proposed a meeting with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Macron suggested he could host Trump for dinner on Thursday, including other G7 leaders, and representatives from Ukraine, Denmark, Syria, and Russia.
