Union Jal Shakti Minister Shri C.R. Patil launched version 2.0 of the 'Floodwatch India' mobile application developed by the Central Water Commission (CWC) in New Delhi. The Central Water Commission (CWC) had released the first version of the mobile application on August 17, 2023 with the objective of using mobile phones to disseminate information related to the flood situation in the country and flood forecasts up to 7 days on a real-time basis to the public.

The first version provided information on flood forecasts at 200 level forecasting stations. Version 2.0 of the app provides current information related to additional 392 flood monitoring stations, taking the total number of these monitoring centers to 592. Thus, users get a comprehensive and detailed overview of the flood situation across the country. In addition, this version also provides additional information about the storage status of 150 major reservoirs in the country which will help in better understanding the potential flood situation in their downstream areas.

Developed by Central Water Commission itself, ‘Floodwatch India’ uses advanced technologies such as satellite data analysis, mathematical modelling and real-time monitoring to give accurate and timely flood forecasts. The user-friendly app presents all the information in 2 languages – English and Hindi – and is available in readable and audio broadcast format. The app also provides flood forecast at the nearest location where users can get information about the flood situation at their nearest centre on the home page itself.

The ‘Floodwatch India’ app is available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, providing a wide reach to users globally.
