Urban Local Body Presidents or Vice Presidents Cannot Be Removed Before 4.5 Years

The Presidents or Vice Presidents of Urban Local Bodies cannot be removed before 4.5 years (four and a half years). According to the Constitution, the term of office of the President and Vice President of urban bodies is five years, and they can only be removed before this term through a no-confidence motion, which requires following a specific process.

Political turmoil has intensified once again in the state's municipal corporations. Earlier, the state government had decided not to allow no-confidence motions against Presidents for three years. However, now after three years, efforts to remove the Presidents have accelerated in about 40 municipal bodies, including Vidisha. Sources indicate that due to increasing protests and political instability, the state government is preparing to extend the term of municipal Presidents to 4.5 years.

It is reported that several municipal Presidents have met with the Chief Minister, stating that their own party's councilors and leaders are not allowing them to function effectively. During this, they have requested the extension of their term, seeking political stability. The Chief Minister has instructed the Urban Administration Department to prepare a proposal to extend the term of Presidents to 4.5 years. It is believed that if this decision is passed in the upcoming Cabinet meeting, it could bring an end to the ongoing political strife in Vidisha and other municipal corporations in the state.

Deputy Director of Urban Administration, R.K. Kartikeya, stated that the proposal has been prepared and will be sent to the Additional Secretary, after which it will be presented for approval in the Cabinet meeting.
