U.S. Judge Blocks Trump's Birthright Citizenship Executive Order

U.S. Judge Blocks Trump's Birthright Citizenship Executive Order

On July 10, a U.S. federal judge blocked the enforcement of an executive order from former President Donald Trump that aimed to restrict birthright citizenship. The ruling came from U.S. District Judge Joseph N. LaPlante in Concord, New Hampshire, following a request from immigrant rights advocates to grant class-action status to their lawsuit.

The judge stated that the ruling would be temporarily stayed to allow the Trump administration time to appeal. Although the U.S. Supreme Court has previously limited the ability of judges to halt Trump's policies through nationwide injunctions, this decision provides a temporary block.

Citizenship at Risk for Children

The lawsuit represents children whose citizenship could be threatened by the enforcement of Trump’s executive order. Advocates argue that limiting birthright citizenship violates constitutional protections and disproportionately affects immigrant communities.

The court will continue to evaluate the claims, and further hearings are expected as the case develops.
