US Open Doubles Champion Max Purcell Suspended for Doping

       

Two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell has been temporarily suspended for violating tennis's anti-doping rules. The 26-year-old Australian player admitted to violating Article 2.2 of the anti-doping code, which pertains to taking prohibited substances. The International Tennis Integrity Agency released a statement on December 23 confirming the suspension.

       

Purcell also posted a statement on Instagram, explaining that he had inadvertently taken a vitamin injection that exceeded the acceptable limit of 100 milliliters. The tennis player stated that he had informed the medical clinic that he was an athlete, and thus the dosage should have been under 100 milliliters, but it was later revealed that the amount exceeded the limit.

       

Purcell, along with Matthew Ebden, won the US Open men's doubles title this September. Earlier, in 2022, he also won the Wimbledon men's doubles title with his fellow Australian, Matthew Ebden. Purcell is currently ranked 12th in the ATP men's doubles world rankings. He was also a two-time runner-up in the men's doubles event at the Australian Open in 2020 and 2022.

       

Purcell is the latest tennis player to be embroiled in a doping controversy, following Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner. Max Purcell was born on April 3, 1998, in Sydney, Australia. He turned professional in 2016 and won his first Challenger title in South Korea the same year. Purcell made his major debut at the 2017 Australian Open, where he received a wild card entry in doubles but lost in the first round.

       

Since 2022, Max Purcell began winning big tournaments, including the Wimbledon doubles title with Matthew Ebden. He had been on an upward trajectory until this doping controversy surfaced.
