VD Satheesan Appointed as New Chief Minister of Kerala
After ten days of suspense and speculation following the election results, the Congress party officially announced senior leader VD Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala on May 14.
Satheesan is widely regarded as the key face behind the historic return of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala.
Although a section within the party was also considering the name of KC Venugopal, the final decision was made in favor of Satheesan.
Ending nearly a decade of rule by the Left Democratic Front (LDF), the UDF secured a historic victory by winning 102 out of 140 seats in the Kerala Assembly elections.
An Experienced Face in Kerala Politics
VD Satheesan is a well-known and experienced figure in Kerala politics. A lawyer by profession, he is recognized for his clean image and logical debating skills.
He served as the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Legislative Assembly from 2021 to 2026.
Satheesan represents the Paravur constituency in Ernakulam district and has been continuously elected as an MLA from the seat since 2001.
Early Life and Political Journey
Born in 1964 in Nettur, near Kochi, Satheesan began his political journey through student politics under the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
He pursued studies in social work and law and also practiced as a lawyer in the Kerala High Court.
Strong Support Within the Alliance
Satheesan enjoys strong support not only among Congress workers but also among alliance partners such as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Kerala Congress (Joseph).
It now remains to be seen how he will guide Kerala’s development and governance in a new direction as Chief Minister.
