After massive protests over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the West Bengal Assembly on 3 September passed the Aparajita Bill to amend some provisions in the Criminal Code (Indian Justice Code) for the state. These amendments make the punishment for rape and child abuse more stringent. The amendment law has provided for death penalty for the crime of rape, while the new Criminal Law (Indian Justice Code) implemented across the country from July 1 already has the death penalty for the heinous crime of rape.
