सेना चीता और चेतक हेलिकॉप्टरों के अपने पुराने बेड़े को 2027 से चरणबद्ध तरीके से सेवा से हटाने पर विचार कर रही है. साथ ही इनके स्थान पर लाइट यूटिलिटी हेलिकॉप्टर को शामिल करने के साथ-साथ पट्टे पर लेने के विकल्प तलाशने पर विचार कर रही है. 7 नवंबर को मिली जानकारी के मुताबिक, आर्मी एविएशन कोर वर्तमान में लगभग 190 चेतक, चीता और चीतल हेलिकॉप्टर का इस्तेमाल कर रही है. सेना को लगभग 100 लाइट यूटिलिटी हेलिकॉप्टर (एलयूएच) मिलेंगे, साथ ही वह अपनी आवश्यकता को पूरा करने के लिए हेलिकॉप्टर लीज पर लेने के विकल्प पर भी विचार कर रही है. एक सूत्र ने कहा, ‘‘हमें टोही और निगरानी गतिविधियों के लिए लगभग 250 हल्के हेलिकॉप्टर की आवश्यकता है. इनमें से लगभग 100 से अधिक लाइट यूटिलिटी हेलीकॉप्टर होंगे और एचएएल के पास आज की क्षमता को देखते हुए, हमें चीता और चेतक के पूरे बेड़े को बदलने के लिए वैकल्पिक साधनों पर भी विचार करना होगा.’’

एलयूएच का निर्माण हिंदुस्तान एयरोनॉटिक्स लिमिटेड (एचएएल) करता है. सूत्र ने कहा, ‘‘हम कुछ अन्य विकल्पों पर विचार कर रहे हैं, जैसे पट्टे के विकल्प, जिसके तहत हम कुछ वर्षों के लिए कुछ हेलिकॉप्टर पट्टे पर लेते हैं, और बाद में यदि एचएएल शेष संख्या का निर्माण करने में सक्षम होता है, तो शायद हम एचएएल से भी ले सकते हैं. हालांकि जोर स्वदेशीकरण और देश के भीतर से हेलिकॉप्टर लेने पर है.’’ चीता और चेतक हेलिकॉप्टर बदलने की समयसीमा लगभग 10-12 वर्ष होने की उम्मीद है.

The Indian Army is considering the phased removal of its old Cheetah and Chetak helicopters from service starting in 2027. Along with this, they are exploring options to replace these helicopters with light utility helicopters (LUH). As of November 7, the Army Aviation Corps currently operates around 190 Cheetah, Chetak, and Cheetal helicopters. The Army is expected to receive approximately 100 Light Utility Helicopters (LUH) to meet its requirements. They are also considering leasing helicopters to fulfill their needs. An insider mentioned, "We need about 250 light helicopters for reconnaissance and surveillance activities. Over 100 of them will be LUHs, and depending on HAL's current capacity, we will also have to consider alternative means for replacing the entire fleet of Cheetah and Chetak." Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) manufactures the LUH. The source added, "We are exploring various options, such as leasing helicopters, where we may take some helicopters on lease for a few years, and then, if HAL is capable of building the remaining numbers, we may take them from HAL. The emphasis is on indigenization and sourcing helicopters from within the country." The replacement of Cheetah and Chetak helicopters is expected to take approximately 10-12 years.
