Goa Declared Fully Literate State with Help of Retired Teachers and NSS Volunteers
On May 31, during Goa Foundation Day celebrations, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant declared Goa a fully literate state. This milestone was achieved through the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the state-run Jan-Jan Sakshar literacy initiative.
According to the Ministry of Education, a state is considered fully literate when it achieves a literacy rate of over 95%. To meet this standard, Goa identified and educated 2,981 illiterate individuals above the age of 15.
The program's success was made possible with the help of retired teachers, NSS (National Service Scheme) volunteers, and students who contributed to the literacy drive. Learners were provided study material in Konkani, Marathi, Hindi, and English, covering essential topics such as financial literacy and life skills.
CM Pramod Sawant credited the NEP 2020 and grassroots efforts under the Jan-Jan Sakshar program for making Goa the latest state in India to achieve 100% literacy.
