मुख्य चुनाव आयुक्त (सीईसी) और चुनाव आयुक्तों (ईसी) की नियुक्ति और सेवा शर्तों से जुड़ा विधेयक 12 दिसंबर को नए बदलावों के साथ राज्यसभा से पारित हो गया है। जिसके तहत सीईसी व ईसी का दर्जा अब सुप्रीम कोर्ट के न्यायाधीश के बराबर होगा।

इससे पहले विधेयक में इनके पद को कैबिनेट सचिव के समकक्ष रखा गया था, जिसका विपक्षी पार्टियों सहित पूर्व मुख्य चुनाव आयुक्तों ने भी विरोध किया था। इसके बाद राज्यसभा में सरकार की ओर से संशोधित विधेयक पेश किया गया। बावजूद इसके विपक्षी दलों ने इनकी नियुक्ति की प्रक्रिया पर सवाल खड़ा किया और विधेयक पारित होने के दौरान सदन से वाकआउट किया।

The Bill related to the appointment and service conditions of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (EC) has been passed by the Rajya Sabha with new changes on December 12. Under which the status of CEC and EC will now be equal to that of a Supreme Court judge. Earlier in the bill, his post was kept equivalent to that of Cabinet Secretary, which was opposed by the opposition parties including former Chief Election Commissioners. After this, an amended bill was presented by the government in the Rajya Sabha. Despite this, opposition parties raised questions on the process of their appointment and staged a walkout from the House during the passage of the bill.
